| We used to brand everything. Used an electric brander which was good enough. Put a metal bucket on its side by the chute and put the iron in there. It will stay hotter and not burn anything up. Never really cleaned the brander, and I would press real hard for 5 seconds, 2 or 3 seconds probably isn't enough. This was on horned herefords, so the brand would be easier to see than on black cows.
There is a guy from Lawrence that is starting a freeze branding side business. It might be something we would be interested in doing when we work our cows in the spring. Freeze brands look a lot cleaner than the job a branding iron does and shows up really well on black hide. | |
