WY, OK
Never heard the Kerosene thing, all you need is a wire brush or bucket of sand to keep it clean. Biggest mistakes I see is not leaving the iron on long enough and the brand doesn't take or branding before the iron is hot enough. As Mark said you want it to look like leather and don't be afraid to take your glove and wipe it to make sure a bunch of burned hair doesn't come off and you still have unburned skin underneath. Depending on what your brand is you may have to roll it on since it is on the hip. Also blacks take longer to brand, they seem to be more greasy if that is what you have. When it is hot enough it should only take 2-3 seconds to brand, if it is taking longer the iron isn't hot enough or is dirty. Once you have it on push firmly and when they kick try and hold it on, only makes it worse hitting them more than once. If you happen to have a circle do NOT twist the brand, all you will do is rip the skin open. If you do happen to get a good hot iron (not likely with an electric) you do have to be careful you don't burn clear through the hide.
