| Somebody on this site said that you grow feed. A cow is just the harvest machinery. That's always stuck with me as some good wisdom. Focus on the feed as much if not moreso than the cow.
To the OP, maybe buy some lightweight calves in the spring to run on the pasture and then turn them out on stalks in the fall. Keep your cost of gain cheap. If interest rates go up, it may be tough to justify holding those calves for longer periods, though. Don't get a bunch of money tied up in cattle equipment. I'm always amazed at the guys with a $25,000 trailer for their 20 head of cows.
I have a little pasture, but just rent it out. I can't make cattle pencil out if i include anything for my time, which a person should if it takes you away from other money making enterprises. Don't forget to include the cost of driving to check them. That can eat up $5/day real easy if you're going more than a couple miles. That's where scale enters the equation. $5/day for 5 head doesn't work. For 100 head it does.
