Kansas | Yes, on the original models from the factory, there is quite a pause waiting for the front end to kick in. It is worse in the winter than the summer.
As Mr. Morgan wrote, there is a "bullet" style piston that has a gas behind it with a warming device. When you engage the 4wd the warming device warms that gas up and makes it expand pushing the "bullet" fowards and engaging the front end for 4wd.
Now imagine a winter day, 20 below zero and you want 4wd and kicking that thing on. You might wait higher than 2 minutes if the front end is submerged in icy water.
This is why the push from other posters as jon hagan explains. The new style is simply electronic. Once you push the button it forms a magnetic field and engages the "bullet" immediately.
Again, one of generous motors "advancments" that was quite backwards IMHO. | |
