When all else fails and the money runs out and you are stuck with medical bills or wind up in a nursing home you turn to Medicaid which is run by the county and state. They take all of your assets and income except about $20 a month and enough savings to bury you. They leave the surviving spouse's income alone and they could keep their house if they owned one.
