Central Iowa | What I have in CRP is filter strip along a creek that usually flooded at least once each year and almost never produced crop anyway. The others is land that needs to be in waterways anyway to stop erosion. I don't see much being gained in either scenario. I still need waterways in those places, and crop failure 80% of the time isn't a great record. I am not on junk farm land either.
There might be some acres out there that could be farmed, but most of it is small tracts of less than perfect land. Releasing could make a difference, but I don't know that it will be a complete solution. I worry that the next time there are low prices and a glut of grain (it will happen, I just don't know when) we will have an even larger problem because of extra acres. A long term solution to a short term problem might bite us in the butt later. | |
