I think the fact it was stripped into frozen or near frozen soils in December with a shank machine may have left a chasm below the surface that just never completely disappeared. The top may have looked ok with a rolling basket etc but there was likely an air pocket below. The ground chiseled earlier in the fall didn't have this air pocket with smeared sidewalls directly under the seed in most areas. Just a possibility.
