Bourbon,Indiana | And are willing to admit it?!?
I have no crop insurance this year. There have been several times in the past where I carried some. 2008 was one year....1998 was another .
This spring the crop insurance guy worked hard trying to get me to sign up, but I told him I could put the premiums to better use by paying down land notes. Of course that was assuming a "generally" normal crop year.
Now we are burning up here in northern Indiana. Some may say I am complaining. No, I entered this season with my eyes wide open to all possibilities.
Edit: I should mention that the farm averages 6-7 bu. more soybeans & 18-20 bu. more corn than the county average. I have only been under the county once for corn & 4 times for Beans in 15 years.
I will admit my stress level is somewhat elevated.
But the only debt I have is land, I use old, paid for equipment, & I generally do everything myself (one-man-band), so do not have to worry about payroll LOL! I have enough laid by That I should be able to get another crop in the ground next year.
I guess one thing I like is that the gov't does not owe me a thing, nor do I owe the gov't.
Sort of rambling on now....but was curious to see how many others are out there without the insurance?
