| We're having a hard time getting new stands of cool season grasses established and keeping them alive with the hot and dry summers. I've pretty much given up on orchardgrass and beginning to wonder if I can even get tall fescue to live. For the last couple of years I've been planting teff in dry corners that aren't irrigated or double cropping it after wheat. It's an annual and produces decent yields even when it is dry. Not as productive as a good stand of orchardgrass in a good year but I haven't had either lately. An added bonus is it isn't planted until the soil warms up well so you aren't trying to make first cutting in a damp spring like you would with orchardgrass. | |
