Faunsdale, AL | Almost all other forms of nitrogen fertilizer start with anhydrous ammonia. Only thing I can think of that isn't produced commercially from ammonia would be Chilean bird guano nitrate.

So air plus natural gas yields ammonia and CO2
CO2 plus ammonia yields urea
There was a post a while back by JBGruver or someone that had some slides showing the steps in the synthesis of various nitrogen fertilizers, anyone remember that?
Anyway, the cost per unit of N depends on the cost of production and the cost to deliver the product. So a balance of increased cost for other forms of Nitrogen because of additional processes needed vs the cost to deliver the anhydrous because it's toxic and must be held under high pressure.
