Subject: Re: Need advice on Pythium damaged corn

Eastern Iowa
Leave it, don't give up. Had a horrible field of pythium or seedling blight last year. Had half stands in many areas, corn on corn and the field averaged 191 bu/ acre. Would have been 220+ without it but sometimes that's what we're dealt. Sidedressed N and sprayed fungicide at silking, wrote the field off as 160 bu corn or less but was pleasantly surprised at harvest- we did have a wonderful grain filling period though. Don't leave it for your last harvest, the crown never does regain all its health, saw extensive brace roots in the affected areas and have seen poor standability in those areas. Very tough to look at all year, we definitely need better tools for dealing with this disease.
