Subject: RE: how can precision planting be worth 200 mill

I think it has to do more with the data collection than it does with precision planting's physical equipment on planters. Think about all of the data that is inputted into those 20/20 monitors while in the field. Hybrid/Variety, skips, depth, speed, etc. My guess is Monsanto will want to expand this type of software to include chemical app maps as well. This will put them clearly ahead of Dupont, Syngenta, and Dow. With access to the data that farmers input into those monitors, they can track sales info, plan according to production trends, etc.

With that being said, I'm disappointed this aquision has occured. Personally, I'm not a farmer, but I work as a fertility and scouting consultant for many in the area. Looking short term, I could see PP operating costs go up (growers must pay for yearly "upgrades" as an example), but I think there is a bigger problem looming in the long term. If Monsanto is provided a clear advantage with all of this data, where does it leave the other players a competative advantage?

Also, I'd say 25 to 30 percent of PP dealers are also Pioneer dealers. We'll see how it shakes out...
