southern MN | Agree with the other fellas, 2 foot spacing between your 2x's. Just easier to hit if you use the full 2x4, not that a 2x2 wouldn't be fine if you never miss....
As to deck screws.... Ugh. They are terribly brittle, snap off. There are some torex or similar headed building screws that will work _much_ better - typically a golden color. As well, you need longer to get through the 2x, the layer of shingles, the decking, and into the actual roof rafter. If you have peeled off the old shingles, yuou still have alot of matireal to go through, and you really want to bite into the actual rafters well. This is going to take a longer screw, and a better one than a 'deck screw'. Because they are terrible....
Yup, costing you more momey, but - it's what it takes, even on a small roof, need it anchored down for wind. At least on a small roof, you really don't have much matireals at all, so the costs don't get too crazy.
I'd much sooner do the pole barn spikes than a deck screw. The best is the heavier better made construction screws.
