Subject: Re: vine scrapers for spoked closing wheels

tntfarm - 5/21/2012 22:05 Hi Brian, Yes I like the Martin closers, particularly in my long term no-till with covers. That soil is mellow and crumbles more easily than recently converted no-till. They are not perfect as you have experienced but I have found that they meet most requirements for my needs. Usually if I am not closing the seed trench, I am not driving fast enough to crumble the soil. Wrapping is the issue with spiked closers and row cleaners in a heavy stand of vetch. I have "got by" sometimes in a thin stand, but a heavy stand will try the smoothest planter sometimes. Terry

Both Martin Industries and Exapta have vine scrapers for spoked closing wheels.  I think Yetter has some also.  We haven't had that much problem with vetch wrapping on our Thompson wheels (the spokes aren't pointy or narrow), but perhaps in some conditions it would be a problem.

best regards,
