Hi Brian,
Yes I like the Martin closers, particularly in my long term no-till with covers. That soil is mellow and crumbles more easily than recently converted no-till.
They are not perfect as you have experienced but I have found that they meet most requirements for my needs. Usually if I am not closing the seed trench, I am not driving fast enough to crumble the soil.

Wrapping is the issue with spiked closers and row cleaners in a heavy stand of vetch. I have "got by" sometimes in a thin stand, but a heavy stand will try the smoothest planter sometimes.
