Well, some make it on a semi occassionally but they are one reason having kept colonies is better. The beekeeper requeen if the colony is too nasty, if a colony swarms, they take the queen with so it produces bees that aren't agreessive.

If you get rid of the beekeepers, the wild population tends to swing towards the more agresssive, more prone to swarm African type.

Our winters here tend to kill wild colonies though it seems the colonies in the walls of the Methodist church are pretty much a permanent fixture here.
