just weigh enough of em using a good bathroom scale, that you set your ranges and you KNOW by looking who is 60 to 70, or 70 to 80, then 80 to 90, then above 90 and above 100.
Thus you catagorize em as small, medium, medium large, large, then the montsers ( 100's on up ).
Afore is pretty accurate btw, just takes time and numbers.
on the big calves...it's tough to know wt of a 115 vs a 135 without a scale, MO.
( also get some help for those, beats the chiropractor bills )
I don't ever get any of those "monster" calves anymore. They really don't do anyone any good, usually they are slow to get up, joint's might not support them right for a few days, and they are hard on the cow. Plus they don't ever seem to out weigh the lower bw calves in the fall. I don't think you are arguing for a bigger newborn Mark. Seeing where you are located in the US i would bet that you put as much or more value into a cow or heifer that can calve on her own and wean a nice calf as much as we do here. |
