Driftless SW Wisconsin

You guys are going to get me to start weighing some calves somehow! I usually weigh them for the first time in mid May when the vet and I work the whole herd. I just don't like to mess with them early and possibly interfere with the cow taking care of them. Also safer for me because I DO want protective cows.

I don't really know what she weighs but I do think the thick Hereford coat fluffed up by mom may be making them look heavier.  And that is a smaller cow - I am on a drive to reduce my mature cow size to right around 1200 lb.

In any case this is sort of what my pure Hereford calves usually look like and are born unassisted, except for a couple mistakes by me a couple years ago. This cow just spit out this her 2nd calf as if it was all in a days work. Cleaned up the afterbirth, fed her and took a rest.
