The Rabbit Diesel (known as Golf in the rest of the world) had a reputation for being slow off the line compared to the gas Rabbit which was a hotrod. The diesel actually performed decently for the small car of the era while delivering great fuel mileage. VW gradually increased the displacement for better performance reviews and so the fuel consumption while making the interior more comfey and that hurt mileage and the EPA along with CARB and New England emissions didn't help keep up the mileage.
