SW Saskatchewan
Actually, Cuba in association with Israel has done wonders for their Tomato production, likely the best or on par with the best practices in any country. It is a miracle that they have been able to preserve there Island from the widespread erosion so common in the Caribbean. On a scale of land destruction Haiti has to be the worst, the Dominican Republic is better, Barbados and the other cultivated Islands are close to North American standards, but Cuba has kept its most erodable mountain soils in native cover and preserved them.

What I enjoyed the best was the "Can do" attitude of the people- saw an old belarus tractor that had a transplanted injector pump from a nearly as old Fiat. Just the sort of things we were so proud to be able to accomplish in the Saskatchewan of the 1940's and 50's to keep the farm going.

The Cuban isolation by the US was a major mistake-to chose the gambling mafia over the people of Cuba was a stupid error. Cuba allowing itself to become a Soviet catspaw was even stupider.

An interesting sidelight is the miles of cubical cast cement apartments during the soviet era are so run down and dreary on the outside but at night when you can see inside to the individual apartments you can see the care and attention they give to their personal space.
