Watonwan County MN
Dad and I used to finish about 600 hd/yr. I know small potatoes but it worked for us. We had a batch of feeders bought @ $21 in late October. December came, pseudorabies outbreak, they hit $8. We sold in late February 99 for $28. Like alot of farmers around us, we were not going to continue upkeep on the barn to keep losing money thru hogs. Washed it out and stuck ewes in it and haven't looked back since. The hardest thing for us was getting the buyer to come out anymore because he didnt want to mess with small batches. Only wanted semi loads. Our feeder pig guy sold his sows, so we had no source for feeders. Once in a great while we throw around the idea of getting back into it...but then we sober up in the morning. Haha!
