I guess it boils down to how much wrenching you are willing to do yourself. Like others have said at least half or more of that quote is probably labor. Another way to look at it is, how much money have you put into the machine since you have owned it? If you have had it a long time and done very few repairs, that probably isn't an unreasonable amount of money to spend on it if you plan to keep it. Something else to consider is what is being replaced? As others have mentioned you could be looking at a lot of thin metal by now. If that isn't in the quote you can expect trouble with that down the road. Also, you could spend all that money and have an engine or hydro go out soon after making for a really expensive 1991 JD 9500. I guess if it were me I would go over it with the mechanic item by item and find out what absolutely needs to be done now and do as much of the work yourself as possible. Then I would run it a year and sell or trade it off.
