Driftless SW Wisconsin
We have some customers who use row cleaners on their planter when planting 2nd crop beans.

Beans need to be planted into moisture. They also prefer to be about 1/2" deep, especially when soil is warm and you want quick emergence of the second crop.

As you point out these are often contradictory goals. It often ends up being a choice between planting 1/2" deep and praying for rain OR planting deep into moisture and praying they make it to the surface.

With row cleaners and HD DP springs on the planter, along with good vee openers, you can just screw down your Trashwheels, move the dry soil out of the way and plant shallow but into moisture. With the warm soil temps those beans will often emerge in just a couple days. Curvetine closing wheel help a lot in hard wheat ground. They may be in a trench but at least you have a good quick stand. By harvest things tend to flatten out a bit depending on weather. Several customers and a dealer brought this method to my attention.
