I would always use the planter over a crustbuster drill as we have one but it tends to dry out the soil too much. The planter puts them down to moisture and covers them better. Then seals them so newly disturbed dirt doesn't dry as fast. I only plant them deep enough to get to moisture that will get them up. If that's over 2 inches then maybe lay them about 3/4 or 1 inch and hope for a rain. If you wait for a rain then plant double crop it may be too late by time it dries up.
