I sure would recommend a floor drill press and one with a variable speed, either vari-belt drive or a DC motor. An old Delta variable speed is a good drill press. This Ellis would be nice. http://www.ellissaw.com/Drill-Presses/43/drill-press-9400
Grizzly has some pretty good Chinese imports. Shop around for some used machine tools on the web. A lot of the old ones are better than the cheap junk now on the market.
