Subject: Deere hyd FWA 20/30 series ???

A neighbor called me and asked for my help on a 4230 with the hydraulic front wheel assist. I've never been around them before and I wasn't much help to him. But my nature is seeking more info on them. His problem was that the plugs on the center, inside, of both wheel motors were spraying oil out everywhere. It was 0 degrees this morn and I thought that might have something to do with it. He told me that they were relief plugs via the Deere parts man.
My questions are:
Does the main hyd pump feed the wheel motors?
What is the operating pressure of this system?
Why do these relief valves spray out externally, and not back to sump.
Is cold oil most likely the case, or could there be another problem?
Thanks
