MN | Interesting perspective on the economy of scale. Here in row crop country things would be much different. The guy with 4k acres is probably trading in 800,000 worth of used iron on the 1 mil. of new. That changes the math quite a bit. OF course there are some who have higher debt, expanding hot & fast, but many have scaled up over several years and even if they are hiring help the costs would be less than a 1500 acre guy's machinery. We see more father/sons/brothers/family outfits with 2-4 operators and with the proper equipment 3 guys can effectively cover easily 4 times what a one man show can. I think there could be huge savings in input costs as well if you consider buying seed for 4000 ac. from one company compared to 1500 acres worth from same company there will be a substantial difference in per-acre cost. Its all in how you play the "discount" game. Again thats how it looks 'here' in corn/bean country.
AS for the original question, I think farming in 15 years will be just as diverse as it is now | |
