Boone Co. Iowa | We bought a sidedressing rig 3-4 years ago. I think it can pay for itself in one season, as long as you pick the right one. We put it over 1200 acres a year, give or take 150 acres. This past year, dad and I took a fishing trip and ended up hiring a 2nd rig, did all acres in about 2 days before a nice gentle rain. I agree 100 percent, it kind of lessens your risk with what is the most expensive input.
Having said that, we farm with another farmer, and he's got a 60 acre field with lots of curves, turns, etc. and he didn't want to sidedress (too much running over of plants). We put 100% N on in the spring, pre-plant, and I think we had exact same yield. (Well, no measureable difference.) But I think we will continue to sidedress.
Sidedressing started when I came back to the farm, about 5-6 years ago.
