Some years it pays while other years you can't tell the difference. My reasoning for split application of nitrogen is for risk management. Nitrogen is too expensive to just "throw" out there. My program is 50 percent fall anhydrous, 25 percent with the planter (28%) banding on the row, and finally 25 percent sidedress (28%)... It's the best insurance I could "buy"
