West Ky
We lowered our pop on corn down this past year to 29.5 where we have been planting it at 31k-32.5k thinking the down corn was due to the stand. We lowered the nitrogen down some too. Yes a lot of the other guys had down corn too in our area. It just seems where we farm it seems to be a magnet for severe wind storms. Hurricane Ike came through here and it had the same result as this thunderstorm did. I was told at a corn meeting that the planting date had something to do with it... maybe for others away from here but everybody had down corn here except those very few small fields that are irrigated.
This past year we averaged almost 50bu/a soybeans planted behind wheat in late June. Away from the tree lines it was usually 60 bu beans. That down corn averaged around 70 in the middle of the field. We had 1 small field that was mostly standing and it averaged 166.

Ya we can make more in corn but thats if their is something out their to harvest. It makes you sick when all your corn is on the ground every year. Last year we had green snap where it turned out hot in June and the corn exploded in growth and it just snapped over.
In '09 we had excessive amounts of rain and we found out what nitrogen leaching was. Also the roots where spread out in a ball so they didn't spread out trying to search for nitrogen. We were in a meeting the other day and the agronomist was showing pics of corn up north this past year where the roots were in a ball because of all the water. Well we had that in 09. We havent' been able to catch a break here for several years now.
