Subject: Looking at planting more soybeans than usual next year

West Ky

with the high input and the bad yeilds we have been having on corn the last several years (usually downed corn). We are leaning on planting much more soybeans than usual. We usually stay at around 40% corn  35% winter wheat (will have double crop soys) and 25% full season beans. This upcoming year we maybe looking at cutting down to 20% corn 35% winter wheat adn 45% full season beans.

It is just taking too much of a risk with the high inputs to put it in corn. We lost money this past year and last year too due to corn laying flat on the ground. That was due to the extreme high temps and no rain that eats the stalk up and weakens it considerably. Any wind at all will lay it on the ground.
This year 80 mph winds snapped the corn over about 2" off the ground before it started to dent.
Their was some fields that had 90% down corn while the others were around 70%. Some small spots out in those fields with stood the wind and it was usually 70-110 bu difference between the standing corn and the down corn. One of the longest and tiring corn harvest we have had. It would take a week and half to get up a couple hundred acres of corn. Took over a month to get the corn out of the field.

Here lately it is becoming a trend with the down corn since we have had large amounts of down corn 3 out of 4 years. I think it has to do with the genetics since these hybrids are trying to produce so much it takes too much out of the stalk. Not to mention all the freaky weather.  We have had close to a foot of rain now in the last 2 weeks.
