Our refrigerator filter says the media is activated carbon. FWIF - Wikipedia says that's the same as charcoal.

We are on well, and have pretty good water quality but do have one of the "big blue" filters coming off the pressure tank. It's a 50 micron filter, seems to pull a lot of reddish sludge out.. I don't know if that is iron/clay/??

Between that filter and the one in the refrigerator, our water is pretty much tasteless. I grew up on hard well water so like a little taste, but the tasteless stuff works well for the wife and kids.
