behog - 11/29/2011 09:30 I am considering going back to some tillage after 10 years of total no till. Compaction, and diesease in corn seem to be my biggest problems. I have asked several people for help, and even asked for help from the folks on here. Looking around my area it seems that no till works best for people who do not dairy. And who generally only want to grow one crop a year and fllow a corn soybean wheat rotation. I thank everyone on here for their advise, much of it is very good. But I can just not make it work. We just hauled manure on soybean stubble and those darn spreaders are just so heavy.

Some of the dairies in PA who are long-term no-till will only spread manure onto a robust, live cover crop -- such as rye or oats that's jointing, heading, etc.

Also, realize that tillage doesn't do as much to solve compaction problems as people think.
