We are using a Culligan Medalist series softner. A very simple and easy to service / repair unit, We installed it ourself.
Bought it on reputation, as our first Culligan softner ran almost trouble free for 30 years. The control head on the Medalist series is even simpler and easier to service, It has not needed any service except filling salt in 5 years.

The softner keeps the plumbing clean of mineral buildup and allows detergents to work well.
We use a small reverse osmosis water filter system sold by Sears to give us great mineral free water for drinking, cooking ,battery and radiator water.

They work well in our nasty smelling / looking , mineral laden well water.
