We had a lot of green snap where the plant snapped over but did not die off. It was still connected by about 1/3 of the stalk, so it continued to grow and many did produce a small ear. Eventually most of them broke off, so you lost a lot of those ears.
Whether they produced an ear or not, they were pretty much weeds.
