Subject: RE: Wood Framed vs Steel Framed Shop

Thumb of Michigan
We wrestled with steel vs wood when we built. Steel was going to be more money when all costs were tallied. The insulation cost was the biggest difference. Ended up with poles, and not sure that stick wouldn't have been better yet. I don't know how you can build it cheaper than stick- if insulation costs is the only factor.

Ultimately, we missed out on what could have been the best way to get a building with a high R value. Cement contractor that did our floor had another crew building houses with poured cement walls formed with insulated blocks. Claims he could have built it for the same $ per sq ft as what we ended up with, only with 2X the R value. Matter of fact, neighbors just built a big shop using those methods. Not done yet, so I don't know what the outcome is as far as cost to heat. Doors going in this week.
