We did occasionally have problems with wheel chains coming off. The thing that helped the most was carrying the corn head lower to leave the stalks shorter. The shield that was on there wasn't of the best construction but it worked for us.

Did you use those quick release chain tighteners? We only have drive chains on the wing wheels on the new planter and are using the fixed metal tighteners. Never had a chain come off this year. I might be wrong but I think that there is less chance of a chain jumping off using the metal tighteners because there is no give. If a stalk gets in the chain it would have to just roll through instead of pulling the tightener loose.

Just something to think about if the shield doesn't solve the problem.
