SE PA
you might be doing about the best you can do. Since you have lots of manure, legumes are not as attractive- would be hard to find a legume anyway planted that late in your neck of the woods, Did you ever consider changing your crop rotation on a field or two. I knew of a dairy farmer up your way (within 20 or so miles of Auburn, NY). who was going to plant sorgum sudan grass in the last feild he would have planted to corn. Take that off for silage the end of July. Apply manure- ground is usually fit that time of year. Plant triticale, radish and annual ryegrass-could throw in several legumes that time of year if no manure application needed. Take a cutting in the fall and put in silo. take another cutting next spring as the triticale and ryegrass will have overwintered. Plant last corn in that field. He thinks he'll still get the same tonnage but will have broken up his rotation a bit and spread out harvesting. don't know if it will work but i thought it was an interesting attempt at getting some other species in the rotation.
