Subject: Alfalfa for horse hay

Southeast Wisconsin
I have a neighbor that came and asked that I take some soil samples on his alfalfa ground cause he can't sell the hay. It is way too stemy and they don't want it. Is this variety alone, and if so what type of varieties should he look at. He does 3 to 4 cuttings a year. Some mixes he puts grass with it. Also I haven't gotten the results back yet on the soil samples but I'm sure the pH is low. I guessing he needs a ton of lime and a ton of gypsum to start out. The coop has been applying potash now for the past few years but hasn't helped with the quality factor.
