Smyer, Texas
I understand your not trying to pick a fight but just express other opinions however reading this and other post by you it seams that your rotation propositions only occuer on irrigated land. Yes we plant wheat in our pivots every year as a cover crop to help with wind damage. Yes this in the irrigated certainly helps but in dry land this rotation you speak of is not possible. With dry land we have to keep tall beds and deep tillage to make a crop. This thin crust you speak of will blow and also that crust will repel the moisture that falls and this region the rain doesn't come easy it comes hard and will run off. Also you talk about the drip irrigation you say the increased yields are because the land has not been disturbed well from studies its because the moisture is directly applied to the roots. However with studies drip irrigation fields decrease in yields typically after a few years and this could because the surface is too hard and the rainfall can not soak in. Also talking with other farmers with drip they claim a pivot is better anyday than drip. Pivots can with stand these rotaions and application of wheat as a cover crop, but the dryland requires deep tillage to be productive. We are reqired to apply tall beds to prevent wind erosion and with a dry year like this if we had not installed our same practices the southern panhandle would have been a dust bowl in its self.
