Winter triticale. Every day above 32F is a growing day. Incredibly hardy in cold weather. You could plant it by the first week in September, have some grazing going into the winter, let it overwinter in the ground and cut a crop of hay next spring. Makes nice hay. Lots of grain. There are beardless varieties available. Costs a few bucks more per 100# than oats, but the difference in the amount of grain on the head is substantial. |
