The weatherman has said that because the lower levels are fairly dry the rain is evaporating on the way down. For some reason this causes a sudden rush of air downward that really makes the winds blast when it hits the ground. I've seen those kind of dry thunderstorm winds blow over center pivots and damage roofs.
