It all comes down to what level of accuracy works best for you and your specific farming practices. You get what you pay for in a sense. JD advertises a +/- 13 inches of accuracy in a 15 minute time frame 95% of the time with SF1. This explains the drift you were seeing on your 1 mile passes. When you switched to SF2 with the grace period the level of accuracy is +/- 3-4 inches in a 15 minute time frame 95% of the time. As far as upgrading to SF2 the original starfire receivers non ITC were all SF2 ready but they also cost $4000 new. The ITC receiver can be purchased at a lower price of $2500 dollars if all you need is a SF1 level of accuracy. The grace periods are put in there so you can try that higher level of accuracy and see if it is something that works better for you. If you do decide to upgrade your ITC receiver to SF2 you need to make it SF2 ready basically meaning you have to go to your dealer and purchase the unlock code from deere. Once paid you can enter the code into your ITC receiver and then you are SF2 ready, of course then you have to purchase a SF2 subscription. Also when switching to SF2 you need to have an SF2 keycard. Upgrading that is also just a fee which comes with an unlock code and your dealer will unlock that on your keycard. Hope this helps
