Subject: Trucking Question

Central Illinois
I am still fairly new at this business, but I am having trouble finding an intelligent answer to a question. As anyone who has delivered to Triumph Foods in St Joe knows, they have had some MAJOR problems. Does anyone have knowledge of any USDA rule on when a packer becomes liable for the hogs it recieves? When they are unloaded? When they come onto the property? We have had several loads sit ten to twelve hours loaded (and others producers have sat 24), and then being told to leave to deliver to another plant three hundred miles away. At this point, our hogs have been on the truck for as much as 24 hours. I feel that someone should pay for this lost income besides me, but no one is willing to help out. Surely there must be a USDA rule about this.
I am close to saying that the next time this happens, I am calling the Humane Society, PETA, USDA, or someone who can put more pressure on them than I can.
Thanks for letting me vent.
