Vickey,
Wow. I read the comments and it sounds like someone needs to communicate better. ______ Edited__________ [these people want to have zero animal production] and their like.
I tried to post a response but could not access the site, so will let you do it. You can use your name rather than mine.
Some thoughts in no particular order:
1. Contact Paul Sundberg at NPPC [[email protected] ]. Paul is a DVM in charge of AW and other things, and will have ideas as to who to contact in that organization if it is not him. He is a great person and does not want anything to blow up and damage the pork industry. I a copying Paul.
2. Contact Ria de Grassi, California Farm Bureau [[email protected]]. Ria is also great and will try to help mediate this problem. I am copying Ria.
3. There was some good advice on the comment section of the link. Settle this within and do not go to the activist groups. If they want another market they could try Humane Farm Animal Care [www.CertifiedHumane.org] and see if there is a slaughterhouse nearby.
4. The American Humane Association also has certification programs and may have knowledge of a slaughter facility in the area [for numbers 3 and 4 you have to follow their management rules and become certified].
5. The company obviously does not want to shut down. They need to have a plan B for themselves and the producers that sell to them.
6. These people need to work together. They are correct that the amount of time the hogs are on the truck is excessive. Are there fans in the holding area? If not, why not?
7. Maybe the slaughterhouse could work with UC Davis Animal Science Department faculty to improve the conditions.
All for now.
Good luck and let me know if we need to discuss this further.
Richard
