We've swapped different yeared gear boxes in and out before, and works fine. We have a local guy that has rebuilt gear boxes available. You take your bad box to him, get the rebuilt one, and he charges you however much it takes to get the one you brought in working. You keep the replacement, next guy gets your old one. Works pretty slick. Most of the time, they'll have new chains, guides and sprokets at a minimum.
JD 843 & 444, are the gearboxes interchangable?
