Subject: RE: 90-100 day corn in the south question

PROSPECT, TENNESSEE
I tried a 107 day last year on a hundred acres to allow for a more smooth harvest. I had an agronomist from the seed company help with variety selection location on my farm(soil type), fertilization, etc. Everything was perfect until we hit some 100 degree temps during grain fill. The corn couldn't keep up with the heat and I wound up with a grain that was 3/8"long. Moisture wasn't a problem, high daytime and as I understand high nighttime temps ruined this corn. I have some 113 day planted the last week in March that will shell in two weeks DRY! 15 to 17%. normally would be mid September, the heat put it on the freeway! I have the same problem with it, short kernels, but a bunch of them! Time will soon tell, will be the earliest harvest ever here.
