North Dakota
Not sure if it is a punishable crime, but it sure doesn't seem right to do it to someone. We have taken in trades that had less hours than the last warranty claim 2 years prior. When that happens we tell the prospective buyer to contact the previous owner to get the correct hours as we know they are not correct. After taking in a couple of them we now check the hours against the warranty claims. Have had custom combiners purchase new instrument clusters for one season old combines before they head back south or north. Not sure how that would work to turn in a lease combine with 200 hours showing on the hourmeter and have a warranty claim filed at 450 hours. Also had a guy buy a new dash for a 9370 and come back to complain that the hours didn't go back to 0 when he put it in, hours are in the trans controller. On tractors that we replace the hourmeter in the shop we write the hours on the back of the hourmeter before installing in the dash or on a newer piece they have a feature that you can put the old hours into the new meter one time within the first six or so hours.
