I suspect that the high population may be a bigger problem than the tillers.

I have never heard of a traditional corn variety performing well at such high populations.

40k on 30" rows = 5.2" in-row spacing
35k on 30" rows = 6" in-row spacing

Are you sure that the population is really 35-40k/ac?
