Yes. Even modern bred corn can tiller spaced really close together, that is old genetics the breeders can't breed out wihout losing something good.

Surely it is not 40K? You would think that would reduce tillering unless it wants more room between plants.

Cutting doesn't hurt but I don't know if it helps that much.
